The way businesses manage their operations is fundamentally shifting. With the rollout of the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2026 Release Wave 1 (delivering updates from April to September 2026), we are officially moving away from manual data entry and into the era of autonomous, insight-driven ERP systems.

If you want to scale faster, optimize your core processes, and future-proof your digital infrastructure, this release is your roadmap. Here is the ultimate breakdown of what is new, what is planned, and how it impacts your business.

What is the primary focus of the Business Central 2026 Release Wave 1?

The core objective of this release is transforming Business Central into an AI-driven ERP. Microsoft is heavily embedding AI, automation, and Copilot agents into everyday business workflows. The goal is simple: reduce manual intervention, improve data accuracy, and allow teams to focus on strategic growth rather than repetitive admin tasks.

1. The Rise of Autonomous AI Agents & Copilot

The most significant upgrade in this wave is the expansion of AI-powered agents capable of handling complex, end-to-end processes.

  • The Payables Agent: This built-in agent automates accounts payable from start to finish—reading invoices, matching vendors, and preparing documents for approval with human oversight.
  • Custom AI Solutions: Through integration with Microsoft Copilot Studio, developers can now build bespoke AI agents using simple natural language instructions.
  • Enhanced AI Capabilities: New features include managing tasks from all agents in a dedicated pane, discovering agent-processed emails directly in your mailbox, and reviewing agent-generated content right on your Business Central pages.

2. Deeper Power Platform & Ecosystem Integration

Efficiency is all about how well your systems talk to each other.

  • Seamless Automation: Tighter integrations with Power Automate allow for more robust workflow templates tailored to your unique requirements.
  • Shopify Enhancements: B2B and B2C ecommerce just got easier. You can now assign custom collections, sync product variant images, and seamlessly manage item attributes directly between Business Central and Shopify.

3. Smarter Supply Chain & Manufacturing

For businesses handling complex production models, this release brings highly requested operational capabilities:

  • Quality Management: New features allow you to rigorously evaluate the quality of goods and materials (entering Public Preview in late 2025, GA in April 2026).
  • Advanced Subcontracting: Better tools to manage subcontracting within your production processes.
  • Streamlined Dropshipping: You can now post purchase invoices for drop shipments independently of the related sales invoices and easily create purchase orders directly from drop shipments.

4. Next-Level Financial Management & E-Documents

Compliance and speed are the pillars of the new financial updates:

  • E-Document Evolution: The e-documents framework has been massively expanded. It now supports payments, links inbound e-documents to purchase invoices, and processes operational documents like shipments and transfers.
  • Automated Calculations: New built-in tools automatically calculate withholding taxes for vendors, excise taxes, and even specific compliance taxes like those for plastic and sugar.
  • Self-Billed Invoices: Coming in June 2026, this will drastically reduce the time spent on recurring billing cycles.

5. Sustainability Management & ESG Reporting

With global regulations tightening, tracking your environmental impact is no longer optional.

  • Carbon Footprint Tracking: You can now use new sales document report layouts that actively display your carbon footprint.
  • Copilot for ESG: Use Copilot to estimate your carbon footprint even when exact emission factors are missing.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Calculate and report data required for the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and extended producer responsibility (EPR).

How to Prepare for the 2026 Update

This release isn’t just about turning on new features; it’s about rethinking how your business operates. To fully leverage these AI advancements, your underlying data must be clean, and your team must be prepared for process redesign.

If you are looking to map out your upgrade path, customize new Copilot agents for your specific workflows, or ensure your compliance settings are ready for the new wave, our team is here to help.

Let’s turn these new capabilities into real-world ROI.
